Spend a winter day outdoors at the nature center. Activities could include exploring the woods by snowshoe, speeding across the lake on kicksleds, playing games on the ice or in the cattails. Exact activities will depend on weather conditions that day.

Who’s Been Here?

Tuesday, Dec. 26, 9 a.m. –11:30 a.m.
Ages 4 – 5

Get outside and discover which animals are out and about during the winter. Learn how to walk, waddle and hop like the animals at Westwood. End the day watching the silly antics of Westwood’s puppets.

Come explore every fascinating corner of the nature center – prairie, forest and wetland!
We’ll search for critters who stuck around for the winter, play some winter games and
investigate interesting findings. You never know what we will find!

Animals Warm and Cold

Grades K – 5

Learn about different animals at the nature center and how they act during the winter. Warm-blooded or cold-blooded, these critters have amazing adaptations that get them through both Minnesota winters and summers. Spend time with Westwood’s live animals and find out how being warm-blooded or cold-blooded affects how we care for them.

Under the Ice and Snow

Grades K – 5

Whether you are standing on a fresh sheet of snow or on a frozen lake, there is a lot happening below your feet. Discover who makes the subnivian layer into their cozy and secret hideout in the winter and learn what the critters under the ice are doing to survive in the winter. You will even get to try ice fishing!

Nature Art Camp

Combining art and nature is an effective way to test your creativity and appreciate the natural world. Join us to create art inspired by what we see and find outside. There will also be time to explore the trails and woods that surround the nature center with naturalists and other campers.
