The Westwood Hills Nature Center is only as successful as its many wonderful volunteers. Volunteer opportunities include helping with educational programming, special events, planting trees, habitat restoration, animal care and general maintenance to name a few categories.

Do you enjoy hanging around animals, kids, or helping with projects? Are you in grade 7 – 12? If so the Westwood Hills Nature Center’s Junior Naturalist Program may be the volunteer opportunity for you.
Applications for the summer 2018 Westwood Hills Nature Center Junior Naturalist program will be available starting in March, 2018.
- Administrative Support
Represent Westwood Hills and the City of St. Louis Park by greeting visitors, answering phone calls at the front desk and assisting with administrative tasks as needed. Time commitment is weekly on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
- Education Program Assistant
Share the discovery of nature with students during education programs. Assist the naturalists and help guide activities. Time commitment is about 2.5 hours per program; all necessary training provided.
- Animal Care
Assist with the daily care routine for Westwood’s captive animal collection, including reptiles, amphibians and arthropods. Tasks include regular handling of each animal in our exhibit, feeding, occasional cleaning and keeping detailed records. Time commitment is about two hours one day each week.
- Water Garden Caretaker
Gardeners help plant, weed and maintain water gardens at the nature center, including the pond and waterfall feature, as well as the rain gardens near the picnic shelter. No specific time commitment required; training and direction provided.
- Raptor Care
Become trained in raptor husbandry to help care for Westwood’s captive red-tailed hawk. Responsibilities include handling the hawk, implementing a training plan, preparing food, cleaning the mew and keeping detailed records. Time commitment includes multiple training sessions to learn proper procedures, then 1-2 hours one day each week for a minimum of one year.
- Maintenance Assistant
For those skilled at building and repairs, share your talents by contributing to one of many projects happening at Westwood. Time commitment is open-ended; all tools and materials supplied if needed, plus training and instruction.
- General Nature Center Volunteer
Want to volunteer but don’t see anything that fits your skills or interests? The Westwood Hills Nature Center has many opportunities for individuals who want to donate their time and get outdoors. To find out about designing your own volunteer opportunity, contact Laura at email@example.com.
- Natural Resource Steward
Natural resource stewards work independently outdoors to help maintain hiking trails, remove invasive species to support biological diversity, plant and water new plantings and generally help preserve the ecological integrity of the park reserve. Time commitment is open-ended; all tools and materials supplied if needed, plus training and instruction.
